Making a Wix site faster: what you can and can't control

By Axyra Nova Editorial · 12 September 2026 · 5 min read · Website fixes

Wix is a hosted platform, which means Wix runs the servers, the content delivery network and much of the code behind your pages. That is convenient, but it also means some speed factors are out of your hands. The good news is that the factors you do control are often the ones that matter most.

This guide explains how to improve Wix site speed: what you can change, what you cannot, and how to measure whether your changes worked.

What Wix controls

Because Wix manages the platform, these are mostly handled for you:

  • Server infrastructure and hosting location.
  • Content delivery network and caching.
  • Core platform code and updates.
  • HTTPS certificates.

You cannot install server-level caching or switch hosts while staying on Wix. If a slow site is caused by the platform itself, the only real option is moving, which we discuss at the end.

What you control

Most slow Wix sites are slow because of what is on the page. That part is yours.

1. Images

Large images are the most common problem on any platform.

  • Upload images close to the size they are displayed at.
  • Avoid huge background images on every section.
  • Use fewer images in galleries above the fold.
  • Add alt text to every image for accessibility and search; MDN's guide to the image element explains why it matters.

2. Animations and effects

Scroll effects, parallax backgrounds and entrance animations look appealing but add work for the browser, especially on phones. Keep them for one or two key moments rather than every section.

3. Apps and embeds

Every third-party app, chat widget, social feed and embedded video adds scripts. Review installed apps and remove those you no longer use. For videos, show a thumbnail that loads the player only when clicked.

4. Fonts

Each font family and weight adds a download. Stick to one or two families and a few weights.

5. Page length and complexity

Very long pages with many sections, slideshows and strips take longer to render. Split long pages into focused pages, and put the most important content near the top.

6. The home page

Home pages often accumulate every feature over the years. Simplify it: one clear headline, one main image, a short explanation, and a clear call to action. Our guide to contact forms that people actually fill in covers the last part.

Measure properly

Test on a phone-sized profile, not just a fast office computer. Use the same pages each time:

  1. Home page.
  2. Your most visited service or product page.
  3. Your contact or booking page.

Google's Core Web Vitals overview explains which metrics reflect what visitors feel: how quickly the main content appears, how responsive the page is, and how stable the layout is while loading.

Write down your results before changes, then again after each round of improvements.

Beyond speed: other quick wins

While you are improving speed, check these too:

  • Unique page titles and meta descriptions for important pages.
  • Working links throughout the site; see broken links.
  • A clear mobile layout using Wix's mobile editor.
  • An up-to-date copyright year and contact details.

Our site audit checks all of these automatically.

When moving off Wix makes sense

Consider a move if:

  • You have optimised images, apps and design and pages are still slow.
  • You need features Wix does not offer or only offers through many apps.
  • You want full control over hosting and technical SEO.

WordPress is the most common destination. The process is similar to moving from Squarespace; see Squarespace to WordPress for the steps, and the 301 redirect map for keeping your search traffic.

A worked example

A small dental practice on Wix had a home page with a full-screen video background, an animated text banner, a slideshow of the team, an embedded social media feed, a reviews widget and a chat button. On a phone, it took a long time before visitors could see the practice's phone number.

The practice made changes over two weeks:

  • The video background was replaced with a single compressed photo of the reception area.
  • The animated banner became a plain heading: the practice name, the town and "Book an appointment".
  • The team slideshow moved to the About page.
  • The social feed was removed from the home page and replaced with a simple link to the practice's profile.
  • The chat widget was set to load only after a short delay.

The home page now showed the heading, the booking button and the phone number almost immediately on mobile data. The changes took a few hours of work and no platform change.

Habits that keep a Wix site fast

  • Ask "is this worth the weight?" before adding any app, animation or embed.
  • Check the mobile layout separately after every design change, because Wix's mobile editor can diverge from the desktop version.
  • Review installed apps every quarter and remove the ones nobody uses.
  • Keep the home page focused on the one or two actions you most want visitors to take.
  • Re-measure the same pages after significant changes so you notice regressions early.

Frequently asked questions

Is Wix slower than WordPress?

It depends on how each site is built. A lean Wix site can be quicker than a bloated WordPress site, and the reverse is also true. Design choices usually matter more than the platform.

Does Wix speed affect SEO?

Page experience is one of many signals search engines consider. More importantly, slow pages lose visitors before they see your content.

Can I add a caching plugin to Wix?

No. Wix manages caching at the platform level. Focus on images, apps, animations and page structure.

What is the single best fix?

Resizing oversized images, especially at the top of the home page, usually makes the most noticeable difference.

How often should I check my Wix site's speed?

Check the same few pages after any significant change, such as a new app, a redesigned section or a new campaign page, and otherwise once a quarter. Testing the same pages each time makes it easy to spot when something has slowed them down.
